How can I change the font size in xgterm?
Jianghua WU wrote on Jan 25, 2010
I installed the V2.14.1 iraf on a 64bit Fedora 12 system. The x11iraf v2.0 beta was also installed. And I separately downloaded the xgterm.LNUX.STATIC and use it to replace the xgterm in /usr/local/bin. The problem is that I cannot change the font size in xgterm, either with the option -fn or with 'ctrl+mouse keys'. The former echoes 'xgterm: unable to open font "10x20", trying "fixed"....'. The latter has no font sizes of 'small, medium, large, ...' to be selected and have "no app-defaults" on the tops of all three pop-up menus. What's the problem?

Fonts for XGterm are set the same way as they are for Xterm, i.e. the "*VT100*font1" thru "*VT100*font6" resources. Whether a name like "7x13" is recognized depends on your XFILESEARCHPATH environment variable and whether the font directory is included with aliases. The XGterm app-defaults file sets the menu labels, the 'fixed' is just the general fallback font name.
You can use the 'xlsfonts' command to list the available fonts, these names should be usable by the '-fn' flag. If you know a font is installed but don't see it listed, check your XFILESEARCHPATH.

Hi, Mike, thanks for your answer. My 'xlsfonts' gives something like:
...
urw-nimbus sans l-bold-i-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-2
-urw-nimbus sans l-bold-i-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-3

-urw-nimbus sans l-bold-i-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-koi8-ru
...
and the command "echo $XFILESEARCHPATH" just gives a blank line. What's the problem?

Those are some of the ~10,000 fonts I see in my list. Try something like the following:
-Mike
setenv XFILESEARCHPATH ":/usr/lib/X11/%T/%N%S:/usr/x11R6/lib/X11/%T/%N%S:/usr/local/lib/%T/%N%S:"-Mike

It doesn't help. The 'X11' is in '/usr/share' in Fedora 12. So I changed the first string into ":/usr/share/X11/%T/%N%S:" but it still doesn't help.

Sorry, Mike, I just need a font package 'xorg-x11-fonts-misc' to enable the change of the font size in xgterm.
