Installing of X11iraf changes some settings of the terminal?

I installed X11iraf on my Mac OS X 10.5.7. It used to pop out a separate window when I started emacs in the terminal. But now it doesn't.

Can anyone tell me what happened during the installation and what should I do to fix the problem?

The X11IRAF installation doesn't touch anything to do with emacs so I can't tell you specifically what's wrong. Are you sure the command you used before wasn't 'xemacs' instead of 'emacs'? Do you have a command alias 'emacs' that does something special? If the behavior is different depending on whether you use an XTerm or an XGterm it might be because you have the XTerm defined as a 'loginShell' and so something in your .login file is being read that isn't when you use an XGterm.

Anyway, I'm certain x11iraf didn't break your emacs.

Thanks, Mike. My emacs works well in the terminal. It just doesn't pop out a separate window anymore. And I'm sure I use the same command. Is there any way to change the system setting to open a new window? Thanks

Sorry, I'm a lifelong vi user. The X11-users mailing list at Apple has plenty of messages about emacs problems under Leopard, there's also and old posting on the matter of a separate window at

Perhaps another emacs user has run into the same thing and can post a quick answer.
