ERROR: FXF: EOF encountered while reading FITS file
lin wrote on Aug 29, 2008
hello everyone,
I have a strange problem when flux-calibrate using standard, sensfunc, and calibrate. After I executed calibrate, it showed error.
ERROR: FXF: EOF encountered while reading FITS file
I checked up the parameters seted for calibrate. It seems no problem.
Is there anyone met this question before?
I'm afraided it relates to parameter setting when IRAF install.
Thank you

I suspect this is due to a bug in the FITS header handling. In some circumstances the addition and deletion of header keywords can put the FITS END card in the wrong place resulting in this message. These problems are expected to be fixed in the next release and some were fixed in the current version.
The approach to try and avoid this is to use HEDIT to add a few dummy keywords. Doing an IMCOPY first and working on the copy may also workaround the problem.
If you can seem to avoid this problem send us the IRAF version you are using and we can try and give you further workarounds.

hi, Frank
This problem seems random. I used IRAF 2.14. Oddly, these tasks are normal now, when deal with the same files.
Thank you for your help. I can try to use HEDIT next time I meet that.

I encountered the same problem as Lina. I am using IRAF 2.14, on MacOSX, scisoft. When I run the task calibrate, I get the error message:
ERROR: FXF: EOF encountered while reading FITS file (cbd+26r.ms.dc.fits)
where cbd+26r.ms.dc.fits is the *output* file.
HEDIT and IMCOPY were not helpful. This is a frustrating bug!
Frank, can you recommend a workaround?
Lina, what did you do that made the error go away? (I'm willing to try anything)
Will appreciate any help-- thanks!

somehow when i chose an output file name without "fits" in the end, it worked...

Hi,
I have just tried the standard-sensfunc-calibrate procedure and have encountered the same error. I am currently using version 2.15. Has any progress been made on a way to work around this bug? I have not had any success using HEDIT or IMCOPY.
Thanks,
Tom

I'm running Pyraf through astroconda on OS X 10.12.3 Sierra.
Current conda install:
platform : osx-64
conda version : 4.3.11
conda is private : False
conda-env version : 4.3.11
conda-build version : 2.1.4
python version : 2.7.13.final.0
requests version : 2.12.4
A similar error also occurred while I was running identify inside imred.kpnoslit
IrafError: Error running IRAF task calibrate
IRAF task terminated abnormally
ERROR (1121, "FXF: EOF encountered while reading FITS file (cdFT4.1_02hh_NS.0052r.fits)")
I've been using a document objects.ls as in input into identify ( built with ls *fits \$this->_split2($m[0]) objects.ls ).
I fixed the issue by removing the .fits from the ends of my objects inside objects.ls. I also ran kpnoslit inside the current directory. The combo solved the issue for me.

I meant while running calibrate, not identify.
