Generalized problems on Ubuntu installation

Hello everybody!
I'm trying to install de IRAF on a Kubuntu 5.10 (Breezy) - i386, and I'm getting some problems.
I tried it on two ways:
1 - The debian packages ( http://iraf.noao.edu/iraf/ftp/contrib/debian.readme )
2 - The default PC-IRAF V2.12.2, "linux" binaries.
On the first way, the deb packages are installed without errors messages. I did install x11iraf (1.3.1) and guiapps (guiapps.tar.Z). But, when I type any command at "cl" session, for exemaple, rfits, the message apears:
" PANIC in `/usr/lib/iraf/iraf//bin/x_dataio.e': Memory has been corrupted "
If I try imhead > " PANIC in `/usr/lib/iraf/iraf//bin/x_images.e': Memory has been corrupted "
At the end of "cl" session:
ERROR: Abnormal termination of child process 'bin$x_images.e' .
Mike (fitz) has helped-me with "stacksize limit" error, but messages just stopped for a moment.
To the second one, I did follow the exact instructions on manuals (pciraf.ps.gz), and installed x11iraf (1.3.1) and guiapps (guiapps.tar.Z).
But when I try to use the iraf (typing "mkiraf" or "cl"), the commands aren't recognized (they aren't on the /usr/bin folder).
So, I try to run the cl on /iraf/iraf/unix/hlib/, and errors like PANIC apears.
PS: Instead of using "csh", I tried to use "tcsh" too. And no errors messages apears during the instalation.

IRAF installations on Ubuntu distro have different paramenters compared to the others?
Could You help me with this?
Thank You,
Daniel Moser

This page describes how to setup IRAF on a Ubuntu/Debian machine. Apart from the exact commands, there are some instructions in square brackets that need to be followed. Installation of X11IRAF, DS9, Tables, and STSDAS are included.
