I have a new Sun Ultra-45 with solaris 10 operating system. Can ximtool be
installed on this system, or must I use ds9? In either case, where do I find
the requsite software?

Bearing in mind any potential 24-bit display issues and the needed workarounds, try the binaries from

ftp://iraf.noao.edu/pub/fitz/x11iraf-v1.3.2-bin.ssun.tar.gz

DS9 can be had from http://hea-www.harvard.edu/RD/ds9/
