ximtool, color, and Red Hat 9

Andrew Potter wrote on Jan 19, 2006

I forgot to include some information in my previous post, complaining about color problems in ximtool used with RH9.

(1) The color bar at the bottom of the ximtool panel displays a more or less random array of colors, with blacks, greys, whites on the left end, random colors elsewhere.
(2) After entry of !ximtool & there are a number of messages displayed:

The first statement is: [1] followed by a number that changes from one installation of ximtool to another.

The next statement is: "Cannot allocate colormap entry for "#7c9498"
The number #7c9498 is the same from one installation to the next.

Following this are 18 statments "Cannot allocate colormap entry for " " where names of various colors are between the quote marks.

(3) I installed ds9 to see if it would work, but it shows exactly the same color behavior..l. Perhaps something has been left out of the RH9 installation??

Drew,
Sounds like the colormap focus problem that's been posted previously,
and for which there is no easy workaround. The 'color not found' message
probably means some other application (or the desktop/window-mgr itself)
has used all the colors already. Be sure web browsers are closed but on some
systems even a Post-It app will allocate all the colors. Use of VNC for just
running ximtool is what most people seem to use, I think RobSwatters hinted
at a different solution in his post last week and I'd ask him to elaborate here.
