Continuing problem with ximtool and RH9

As advised, I installed ximtool into Red Hat 9 using version 1.3.2. Now when I open ximtool, there are no error messages. However, when I display a fits file, the image is composed of multicolor speckles, even though the ximtool control panel says I am in grayscale. The brightness and contrast indicators on the control panel move obediently with movement of the mouse over the image screen, but the image itself doesn't change from the multicolor speckle display. numlock was off, and I checked to be sure the monitor was set to 256 levels.
