question about ximtool

Guest wrote on Jan 04, 2006

Hello,

I have been using IRAF with XIMTOOL for many years,
and am planning to purchase a new Sun workstation
to replace my old Sun Ultra-10. I am concerned that
with the new computer, I might no longer be able
to use XIMTOOL, but will have to use SAOImage. I
much prefer XIMTOOL and wanted to ask if it is
still supported in the latest versions of IRAF.
I have seen situations where both XIMTOOL and SAOImage
were available on a given machine. Is there anything
special that might be needed to allow me to continue
to use XIMTOOL?

thanks very much,

Ron Buta

XImtool still runs unders Solaris, and still has the 8-bit default visual limitation. DS9 will work on a 24-bit display but has its own quirks (e.g. no
wcs/pixel readout when displayed from IRAF, a DS9 limitation, not an iraf
one). Search the forums for "BadMatch" and you'll quickly find the standard reply about the 8-bit workarounds.
