We don't have a version specifically for Ubuntu however the
current release is known to work. You'll probably want the "linux"
architecture binaries (i.e. ib.lnux.x86 and nb.lnux.x86), everything is
available from
ftp://iraf.noao.edu/iraf/v212/PCIX

Ubuntu is like recent Debian: the RHUX distribution works fine, one just has to modify some of the scripts so that the presence of /etc/debian_version causes the "redhat" architecture to be selected.
I haven't tried LNUX on Debian or Ubuntu recently, but there used to be incompatibilities when compiling packages from source. This was with IRAF 2.11.3, and if I remember correctly the libc.5 vs. libc.6 issue was part of the problem; I'd expect that the IRAF 2.12.x LNUX builds no longer suffer from that particular problem. In any case: RHUX works on Debian (2.2, 3.0, 3.1) and on
Ubuntu (5.10 amd64, with the caveat that I haven't tried compiling on amd64).

I was able to easily get IRAF installed on Ubuntu using this:
ftp://iraf.noao.edu/contrib/debian.readme
Once you follow those directions all you need to install are iraf and iraf-common. It is only 2.12.2.a though. Maybe they will be updated soon.

IRAF on Ubuntu is, IMHO, no problem 8)
I've installed it far easier on Ubuntu laptop than on the same machine running Fedora and Suse! Just follow the *EXAMPLE* at the end of the debian walkthru...

This page describes how to setup IRAF on a Ubuntu/Debian machine. Apart from the exact commands, there are some instructions in square brackets that need to be followed. Installation of X11IRAF, DS9, Tables, and STSDAS are included.
