IRAF v. 2.12

To whom this may concern:
 
I am Jonathan Feldman from the IT Helpdesk department of Bob Jones University.  Dr Ron Samec of our physics department is the main user of the IRAF program.  Recently a new machine had been built for him and IRAF was installed.  The Ximtool shows the picture in abnormal colors instead of grayscale.  I tried going through the options and switching the program to use grayscale.  The Ximtool seemed to keep the setting, but it did not affect the out put.  The Ximtool displays the picture with a variety of unusual colors instead of black and white.  What would need to be done to set the Ximtool to always display in black and white or grayscale?

Redhat Fedora Core 2
Radeon 7000 Video card
Custom 2.6.12.3 kernel
