using imexam with ra/dec coords

For a long time I have used imexam in bash scripts, passing to it coords in x,y format. I now would like to use ra/dec instead. I have tried this and I get garbage output. I have played with the wcs parameter, as well as the formats. Nothing works. When I use the same objects x,y it works fine and if the wcs is set to world, the coords in the output are the correct ra/dec. But passing ra/dec results in nonsense results, the ra/dec outputted are completely different than input, and the x.y coords are not correct.
