creating simple test images

Hello

I want to create simple "test images" ( ie.completely artificial images where I define the value of every pixel) to see if the functions I am attempting to apply to an image are working correctly. So these test images would likely have a very simple intensity pattern in the pixels which would very quickly reveal if the processes I want to apply to an image are working correctly., .

What would be the IRAF task that would allow me to create such test images from scratch and to change each pixel value to whatever I want it to be with the least amount of effort?

Also - a second question! - is there any documentation available that gives more info. on the imcalc task? (aside from the help file within IRAF).
