Problem with using rfits in exercise 1

Hi,

I'm having problems with using rfits in exercise 1 of the tutorials.

I've installed iraf from scisoft and it seems to work fine but when I type
"rfits fintro* "" junk old+", I get an error about the header.

I've copied the error plus a few commands before to give you a picture
of what im doing.
I re-did mkiraf but that didn't solve the problem.

If this is the 2011.1.1 SciSoft release then you'll need to be sure to have patched your system with the v2.15.1a patch file from our site to fix a known problem with RFITS on some systems. Otherwise, if this is a v2.14 release of IRAF then the tutorial files may have been corrupted during the download.

Note that you are able to use the FITS files directly (the tutorials are quite old) so the RFITS stage can be skipped, just remember to not specify the ".imh" extensions to filenames.

Hi,

Thanks for the response.

Im unsure how to install this patch.
I've downloaded "patch1-macosx.tar.gz" (im on OSX 10.6.6)
and the instructions indicate that I should replace the
iraf root folder with the one I just downloaded.

Is that correct? That I should replace /usr/local/scisoft/packages/iraf
with the downloaded iraf folder?
I ask because dont want to do something stupid!

So long as /usr/local/scisoft/packages/iraf is the iraf root directory (i.e. doesn't contain an 'iraf' sub-directory itself), then yes, unpack the patch file in that directory to apply the patch. You won't need to do anything else afterwards.

Hi,

The patch didn't install correctly. :(
I replaced the iraf folder with the downloaded one and I get the following
error when trying to start iraf up:

"Cannot find startup file `hlib$clpackage.cl'
Fatal startup error. CL dies."

To be clear, i've attached an image.

On the left is the original directory and on the right is the one I downloaded. When I replace one with the other I get the above error.

Did you delete the existing files before unpacking the patch file? If so, this is the problem: the patch replaces files in an existing installation, it doesn't contain a full installation in itself.

Also, your screen shots appear to be of two different directories anyway. The left side shows "iraf root" in the right panel, the right-side screenshot shows only the unpacked patch file in what appears to be a different directory. If you deleted the existing files you can get the 'iraf-macosx.tar.gz' file for a complete installation (includes the patch) to replace it.

I'd send specific instructions but I don't have scisoft here and can never keep up with what changes anyway.

it worked! :)

Finally, I can start learning IRAF!
