extracting 1D spectra

I am trying to extract a 1-D spectrum from a 2-D image.

I've tried apall, but got line fluxes that seemed inconsistent with the data,
although I'm not at all sure that I know what I'm doing. I used
non-interactive mode, I saw emission lines in all the right places with
the right profile shapes but the line intensities were about a factor of
100 too high. None of the parameters seemed to change the result.
How does one extract a 7 pixel wide band centered on row 512?

I also tried scopy but only managed to get spectra for individual rows of pixels.

My problems seem to be pretty basic.

How do I get these tasks to work properly?

In apall, what is a trace exactly, how do I specify the size of the aperture for the extracted spectrum.

In scopy, what numbers and what format for the numbers go into aperture
if I want to extract a 7 pixel wide band centered on row 512?

What are beams?

Where is xtools.ranges ?

Frank,

Please hold off on this, I think the problem is not with apall.

It seems there is a calibration inconsistency with STIS data.

I have an e-mail into the STScI helpdesk about this.
