Getting Integrated Magnitudes for Clusters in IRAF

SeskaLien wrote on Aug 05, 2008

I am trying to get integrated magnitudes for star clusters in WFPC2 data using concentric radii in a given range. From papers I've read it looks like PHOT can be used to do this, but just from reading the WFPC2 user's guide I can't figure out how I would go about doing this. Any ideas?

My suggestion is you look at the document "A User's Guide to the IRAF Apphot Package" which can be found in the Photometry section of the Docs area on this site (iraf.net). Of course you will likely also need to read the help pages for the tasks themselves. As far as I know there should be nothing special about using WFPC2 data but if so you would need to request help from help@stsci.edu.

I see how to get magnitudes for individual stars in the frame from reading the APPHOT guide, but not how to get an integrated magnitude for multiple stars...

Hi,

My assumption was that you would have an aperture that would cover the star cluster. You never said the scale so I was guessing you would doing distant star clusters. Anyway, if you are not or cannot use a single aperture over all the stars then can't you simply add up the flux from the individual stars?
