Hi, I am consider to buy a new computer to install linux to run iraf , etc. I have one question whether IRAF v2.14 can run on a 64 bit linux distribution or it can only run on a 32 bit linux os?

In general the 32-bit IRAF binaries will work on 64-bit systems, the exceptions being that one cannot (yet) compile on the 64-bit system and you may need to install 32-bit compatability libraries to support some things. 64-bit filesystems have sometimes been a problem in the past, but a lot depends on the linux distribution.
A general introdiuction can be found at http://mjhutchinson.com/journal/2006/11/05/install_iraf_on_ubuntu_edgy_amd64 or you can search the forums here for when that didn't cover the topic completely. Full 64-bit support is still pending.
