improject fails on projection along axis > 1

I am using improject to collapse 3D NIFS cubes into 2-d images. Improject seems to go into an infinite loop if I try to project along any axis > 1. The workaround is to use im3dtran to change the axis of choice to axis=1, then project.
Any idea why the general case won't work?
Thanks

Without an example image and the parameters/calling-sequence you used I can't really say why it might fail. Is the image cube one of the SCI extensions in an MEF or is this a simple 3-D FITS file?
Be sure you're using the Jan14 update and since this is an STSDAS task that the package was linked against that. Since you're in the same building as me and I'm nominally responsible for such things anyway, let me know what machine you're on and whether this is a local installation or the shared version on the NOAO servers.
Another possible workaround is to use BLKAVG with a suitable image section.
Cheers,
