cartesian to aitoff projection

nowheydude wrote on Apr 03, 2008

I've got a fits image I'd like to convert from a Cartesian projection to an Aitoff... are there any tasks that will do this?

Thanks

I'm not sure if you're asking about reprojecting pixels, or changing the image WCS. We don't have a task that specifically changes an image from one projection to another however both CAR and AIT are supported in the WCS.

Tasks such as WCSEDIT can help you edit specific WCS values and I'd suggest you look at the imcoords$mkcwcs.cl script as an example of how this can be used. This task doesn't specifically support AIT but will show you the steps anyway. Normally what you would to move from say a TAN to a SIN projection is to create a dummy WCS using MKCWCS with the SIN values you want, and then use WREGISTER to remap the image from the origin TAN projection. The principle with CAR to AIT should be about the same.

For an example of what an AIT projection WCS should look like, see the sample FITS images at http://www.atnf.csiro.au/people/mcalabre/WCS/sample_data.html Another thing to check would be the WCSTOOLS package from CfA, specifically the 'remap' task may do this automagically (http://tdc-www.harvard.edu/software/wcstools/ ) Hope this helps.

Cheers,
