i'm currently working using iraf, on my final year thesis..
trying to use iraf for differiental phototmetry..
i'm trying to get the instrumention magnitudes from a set of stars from a collection of images..
i have tried using imexamine but with 'a' and ',' and getting differenet values back..
i have also tried using the "phot" function in the noao=>digiphot=>apphot
but i have found that this will only return the value at an indiviual pixel, not for the whole star..
So what i'm wondering is how does one get the magnitude for a whole star??
Any help would be every much appreciated.. .

As a first step, see the photometry cookbooks available from http://docs.iraf.net As the next step, see the exercises that will lead you through some simple examples in ftp://iraf.noao.edu/iraf/misc/exer211.tar.Z (and exer211.readme) . The APPHOT and DAOPHOT packages should do what you want, see PHOTCAL for conputing transformations between instrumental and standard photometric systems.
