grid of pixel values

I know that one can use the "z" command in IMEXAMINE to generate a grid of 10x10 pixel values, but is there a way to do the same thing with a specified grid size (say, 20x20 or something else)?
What I am trying to do is plot one-dimensional surface brightness profiles of various objects. So, I want to average over the horizontal rows over the width of each object and plot it -- and be able to compare this plot with others. So, either be able to plot in same window, or better yet, have the data printed out/saved so it can be plotted using a different program.

LISTPIX on an image section will kinda do what 'z' does, however if you want to maintain the actual grid to maintain the rows you'll need to write a script to format it. The default will be a list of (x,y,value) for each pixel.
