Question about IRAF Licensing

Guest wrote on Jul 11, 2007

Hi,

I want to politely ask...

If IRAF is free as in 'free beer'...why is not free as in 'free software' too?

Best regards

I assume here you use the hardline Debian definition of 'free', and not the anybody-can-install-and-modify-as-they-please-without-having-to-pay-anything definition I personally use??

The answer then is that nobody in Debian has dared lived the open-source dream and modified the system to satisfy their needs, instead they just complain that "upstream needs to fix this". Debian policy and practice don't affect my priorities any more than mine do theirs. If or when the licensing becomes and issue for this site I'll make some changes in the system to address them, but at the moment there are too many other things "on the list", and too little time as it is.
