Question about IRAF

Guest wrote on Jan 14, 2007

I have installed PC-IRAF version 2.12 and X11IRAF on a stand-alone PC,
under MandrakeLinux 10.1, and apparently all went well. But when I
tried exercise 1 of the IRAF tutorial sessions, with the command

cl> display im010 1

I got the message:

ERROR: Cannot open device (node!imtool,,512,512)
cl>

Can you help me? I'm a novice user of both Linux and IRAF. Thank you
for your attention.

Sincerely,
Roberto Madeira.

Image display requires that you have a display server (Ximtool or DS9) running before you try to display. DS9 is available from ftp://sao-ftp.harvard.edu/pub/rd/ds9 and supports 24-bit displays, XImtool is available from the downloads section of this site and still requires an 8-bit display. Note that XGterm is an improved graphics terminal (e.g. color graphics) that is part of the same X11IRAF distribution as ximtool, so you might want to get both downloads in any case.

Cheers,
-Mike
