Have you looked at the ":a N" feature of implot, described in the
help page? This should average line and column plots. You might
also look at the imcentroid task for a marginal centroid, rather than
a gaussian. Various other IRAF tasks provide centroiding using
different algorithms. If you need to do this many times, would
suggest you think about scripting it.
