Both 'xorder' and 'yorder' are parameters to the task so you should be able to set them higher from the command-line for the initial fit.
Otherwise, what exactly happens when you type e.g. ":xorder N" command? Some window systems default to a click-to-focus mouse policy so it may simply be that you need to click on the graphics terminal window before the command input is recognized. Do other keystroke or colon commands work?
