problems using ared under Mac and Linux

Hi,
Recently, I installed iraf on my MacBook running under Mac 10.6.4. Snow Leopard. As I have data from CTIO I also need to install the ared package for reduction. I followed the instructions as given here:

And the installation seemed to work...
But when I try to combine bias images with ared.quad.zerocombine I get the error message:
ERROR: Cannot open connected subprocess (./x_ccdred.e)
"pclip=pclip, grow=0)"
line 47: quad$zerocombine.cl
called as: `zerocombine (mode=h)'
I searched the internet for postings of similar problems but was not successful.
I checked that the x_ccdred.e executable is located in the bin directory. It is also executable, if I try to run it manually from the terminal, i.e. with
/iraf/irafbin/noao.bin.macintel/x_ccdred.e
When I checked if ared works on my Ubuntu Linux machine, I got the same error messages.
I really hope you have a solution for my problem

The last step of the installation is to copy the x_ccdred.e binary from the noao$bin.<arch> directory to the ared$bin.<arch> directory, for Snow Leopard and Ubuntu the <arch> should be 'macintel' and 'linux' respectively. Does the x_ccdred.e binary exist in the correct ared$bin.<arch>?
I ask because we don't have pre-built ARED binaries for either macintel/linux and to get these you would need to build from source. A common mistake is to not reconfigure the package for the architecture before compiling, making the 'bin' directory link point to 'bin.generic' (which should be empty).
Lastly, have a look at the QUADPROC package in the core system as another way to reduce the data, this supercedes the ARED package for this type of data.

I copied the x_ccdred.e file into bin.generic as a last step of the installation which was obviously wrong.
I did not have an ared$bin.macintel or ared$bin.linux directory. I created them as iraf User, moved the x_ccdred.e from bin.generic into the new directories - and now it works well on both machines!
