ximtool problems

Hi:

For my research I need to use 256 colors in the display but everytime I open ximtool it crashes. I have a Macbook pro, intel with snow leopard. I can open ximtool with any other display but for my research I need 256 colors display.

My second problem is that when I try to to open a fits image with display or imexam i get the following error

ecl> display n6388.fits 1
ERROR: bus error
ecl> imexam n6388.fits 
ERROR: bus error
     called as: `imexamine (input=n6388.fits)'
ecl>

Does anybody have a clue why ?

Even though your X server may be running in 24-bit mode, XImtool is still operating as if there were only 256 colors available. So, reset your machine so ximtool will open properly.

This could just mean the FITS file is invalid, i.e. isn't in the proper byte order, missing padding, etc. Does this affect only the tasks that interact with the display or does a simple IMHEAD/IMSTAT similarly fail?

If you could post the image to the anonftp at ftp://iraf.noao.edu/pub I'll see if I can reproduce the problem here.

Let me repeat: DO NOT use 256 color mode!! It will not work with the X11IRAF v2.0 version of ximtool you should be using. Reset the X11 preferences to either use 'millions' of colors or the 'From Display' option, and use X11IRAF v2.0 described earlier.

As for the FITS file, it looks just fine and works well for me (nice globular cluster, floating point values of -902.6 to 62090). I can't explain the bus error, what version of IRAF are you using (i.e. "cl> =version")? Does IMSTAT or IMHEAD work on the image or also fail with a bus error?

So clearly I still have the same problem, not sure why though.

As it seems this problem ended up unsolved, let me come in and try to give a remedy as graphics are one of the only areas in computing that I have sufficient knowledge. Gus, the idea you have at the end of this post is what you need to do. Adjust the setting within ximtool as you were instructed by fitz and make the proper adjustments in the actual graphics setting on your mac. Have you tried running http://www.neverfailgroup.com business continuity software as well? With the 256 colors for your project, I am assuming it is something you are presenting printed out or?
