Problem running DS9 from Cygwin

KB wrote on Jul 23, 2009

Hi,

I installed IRAF in Cygwin, but I cannot start ds9 from the Cygwin-prompt (it runs ok from Windows). I followed the recipe from SIEpedia HOWTOs_IrafCygwin. When I start ds9 from the Cygwin-prompt I get an error-message with heading: "Application initialization failed", and a lot of text claiming that it "Cant find a usable init.tcl in the following directories ...." and then a bunch of stuff with cryptical directories. The whole lot ends with the statement "This probably means that Tcl was'nt installed properly". This goes for ds9 ver. 5.6. I have tried ver. 5.2 as well, but that version gave some other error messages (that did not talk about Tcl).

I have read that ds9 is some kind of Tcl-program, but when I start it from Windows, it works ok without a Tcl installation. Can anyone tell me why it starts complaining about a missing Tcl installation when it is started from cygwin. I have in this forum seen some Q and A's about how Cygwin starts ds9, but honestly I cannot understand how and why it interferes with Tcl.

Can anybody help me?
