problem with ellipse in interactive mode

I am having a problem with ellipse when running it in interactive mode. It runs far enough to print the headings of the separate columns and the it exits with the error: Cannot open devide (node!imtool,,512,512)
right now I have it configured to use ds9 for image display. The ellipse function didn't seem to center the ellipses in the image correctly and they were much too bright. I hoped running it in interactive mode might solve my problems. I'm running IRAF 2.14.1 on Fedora 9 with the latest version of ds9,stsdas and tables, thanks.

The error generically means that the task can't find an image display server. If by 'configured to use ds9' you mean you did something like set the device parameter to be 'ds9' then this won't work, the parameter is meant to specify the overlay color and it is assumed the DS9 is already running.
A simple test is whether you can display an image at all, DS9 should open the communications socket by default and take input. I do remember however that a recent release did break IRAF display, you should check that you indeed have the latest version or else try ximtool.

I originally tried ximtool, but could not get it to work either. It does display correctly using and opening ds9 when needed otherwise, but only seems to break(so far) when using ellipse in interactive mode.

Could you post the output of the "lpar ellipse" command so I can see your parameter settings? You might also try the STScI helpdesk (help@stsci.edu) in case this is a known problem to them.
