trouble installing x11iraf

al374 wrote on Apr 27, 2008

Hello, I'm running on OpenSUSE v10.3

I unloaded the x11iraf-new_gcc.tgz in my local direction

% tar -xvf x11iraf-new_gcc.tgz

and I am trying to utilize the install command, because xmkmf isn't a known command for me.

I'm having trouble with the binary directories, when i set my path, I get a
" installing binaries ......for each: no match"
And the installation terminates

I have moved my bin.suse directory into my local path of ~/iraf/local, is there more I have to do?

Thanks for the help

That file was a snapshot distribution and was source-only. Because the 'xmkmf' command isn't found, it probably means you don't have the X11 development packages installed, these are need to compile the source.

I'd suggest trying the binaries at http://iraf.net/ftp/iraf/x11iraf/x11iraf-v1.5DEV-bin.redhat.tar.gz , even though they're tagged as RedHat they should work on other linux systems as well. If you have problems, post back.

Cheers,

I went ahead and unpacked that one,

I changed the name from bin.redhat to bin.suse because the installion guide was asking for that.

I successfully installed the binaries, and they show up in my bin. But my system still isn't reading the commands, ex. xgterm is still not a recognized command.

I'm almost postive that my path is right, is there a quick way to check my bin path?

First type 'rehash' to pick up any new commands in your path, then try 'which xgterm' to see if it is being found, and 'echo $path' to see if your path includes the /usr/local/bin (or wherever) you installed the xgterm command. You can try giving the full path to start the command to see if there are other errors.
