How to determine galaxy brightness? DAOPHOT???

QSO wrote on Feb 09, 2008

Hi anyone!!!

I am looking for a way to get the luminosity (in magnitudes) of galaxies with IRAF. The original images were proceeded with "KILLALL" which is a script written by McCall and Buta based on various DAOPHOT applications to get rid of star "contamination" in crowded fields. So there are just non-stellar sources left for the analysis. Now I want to make a comparison between two filters (Ha vs. the whole optical emission like on B-V-diagrams in star clusters). Does someone has experience with that??? I am thankful for any help or suggestions!!!

Best regards,
QSO :D

The usual suggestion is to use the ISOPHOTE package in STSDAS, although I don't have any experience with it myself. STSDAS needs to be installed separately and can be downloaded from the STScI site at ftp://ftp.stsci.edu/pub/software/stsdas or the downloads area here.

Cheers,
-Mike
