Hi-
I ran ellipse (stsdas.analysis.isophote.ellipse) on one of my images and it successfully made an output table (gal.tab). Now I am trying to overplot the ellipse contours from the table onto my galaxy fits image in ds9. I can plot the contours when I set ellipse.device = stdgraph (they are plotted in a new stdgraph window), but I cannot see the the contours when I select, e.g., "red" as the device which is supposed to show up in ds9. When I run isoexam with device=red, I do not get any errors and my galaxy image "re-loads" in ds9. So for some reason the contour lines are not showing up. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I just tried this using the latest IRAF/DS9 as
and saw no problems. You might try issuing a "gflush" command after isoexam, especially if you're using an older IRAF version (there was a known bug with the graphics not flushing automatically). If this is an especially large table the graphics buffer may be too small and can be resized with
The 'gflush' here reinitializes the graphics system and is required. You can put this in your login.cl/loginuser.cl for future use (or edit the value there and uncomment). Lastly, try doing
before running ISOEXAM, this works around an old bug in DS9. You can also try a newer DS9, but if you still have problems please post your IRAF and DS9 version and platform as well as an example like the above using dev$pix and default parameters (unlearning tasks involved couldn't hurt either). So I did get it to work, but it was kind of strange. I used the commands
is> set disable_wcs_maps = ""
is> reset cmdbuflen = 256000 ; gflush
is> isoexam n1199.tab dev=red
and still could not see the red contour lines. But when I quit the ds9/isoexam task and then typed "gflush" the red contour lines appeared! I am not sure if that is normal or not...
I am using ds9 version 4.0b7 and Iraf version 2.12.2-EXPORT.

OK, after re-reading your response *carefully*, I see that typing gflush after isoexam is expected to work. I guess it is time to update our Iraf version!

From within a graphics cursor, using ":.gflush" does the same thing. Problem is I'm not sure whether the task uses a trafitional graphics cursor or not (I think it does).
Could also just be an older STSDAS, or at least one linked against the older iraf where the gflush was required.
