IRAF Numerical precision

Guest wrote on Nov 03, 2005

Dear Sir,

I have been using IRAF for a while now and noticed that the output of
photometric processing tasks, such as 'phot' for example, has a numerical
precision of 3 decimal digits, i.e., an accuracy of 1e-3.

Is there a way to increase this accuracy and get 4 or 5 decimal digits ?

Thank you for your time,

Hi Avi,
The only way to change the output would be to modify the code and
recompile, there is no runtime method for changing the formats. Note
however that more decimal places won't actually make the results any more
"accurate", milli-magnitude photometry is about at the limit of what you
can resonably do anyway.

Cheers,
Mike Fitzpatrick
