Red Hat and checksums

Hi When I tried to put everything together from the lots of distributed files things go horribly wrong, so I assume one of my downloaded files is bad. However when I look at the checksums (using the version in RH5.1) although they are similar to each other they don't bear any resemblance to the published ones (either version). Are all my downloaded files wrong or am I just using the wrong version of checksum? Thanks David

Checksums are pretty straightforward things to calculate and you should have gotten matches on either the BSD or SYSV values in the dist- ribution. Since things won't unpack and none of the checksums match, I'd say all of the files are corrupted and you should try downloading them again. Be sure to set binary mode for the transfer, you may prefer to use the IRAF mirror site in the UK at ftp://star.rl.ac.uk/pub/iraf Hope this helps. -Mike

Hi Mike Thanks for that, thats what I thought :-(. I do use the UK mirror, its a great service you give. One request, how about putting a single file version of each of the sets of files on there to make things a little easier for those of use with a good conection. Thanks David
