NUMBER: 8 KEYWORDS: xgterm, RedHat Enterprise WS3, ncurses, garbage on screen DATE: Wed Jan 12 10:31:17 MST 2005 FROM: valdes Q: We are running RedHat Enterprise WS3 (Taroon update 4) and implot produces garbage on the screen. We are not using xgterm because it requires curses 4 and we only have curses 5 A: Be sure that you aren't using konsole or gnome-terminal, as neither of these implement the textronix tools. You must use xterm or xgterm. Garbage on the screen is typically due to a mismatch in the terminal setting. If you see the garbled text when usign an xterm, then you probably have the terminal set to 'xgterm'. Edit your login.cl file. To get xgterm working, there are two things you can try. There is version of x11iraf that is linked against ncurses version 5. You can get that from the following link: ftp://iraf.noao.edu/pub/fitz/x11iraf-v1.3.2-bin.redhat.tar.gz The alternative is to create a symbolic link as follows: cd /usr/lib ln -s libncurses.so.5 libncurses.so.4
