Ximtool CDE
misselt@dirty.phys.lsu.edu wrote on Apr 20, 2000
Hello - I have the well known problem of not being able to
start ximtool because my default X visual is not 8 bit
PseudoColor. My default visual is:
visual id: 0x28
class: TrueColor
depth: 24 planes
available colormap entries: 256 per subfield
red, green, blue masks: 0xff, 0xff00, 0xff0000
significant bits in color specification: 8 bits
I'm running CDE 1.3 on an Ultra60 with a Creator3D graphics
card. I would like to be able to start a windows session from
the CDE login screen and be able to use ximtool. However I
haven't been able to figure out how to start CDE in 8 bit
PseudoColor. I have access to other machines where this is
not a problem, but I'd like to be able to iraf normally without
switching offices :) Any suggestions on configuring CDE to
default to pseudocolor appreciated! Thanks,
-Karl

You can change the system default by editing the system
/usr/dt/config/Xservers file to add the arguments
........ defDepth 8 defClass PseudoColor
Or, on the command line start X using something like
/usr/openwin/bin/Xsun :0 -dev /dev/fb defclass PseudoColor
Note that you can put the above command in a .xserverrc file in your login
directory (see the xinit man page) and just comment it out when you want to
restart in 24-bit mode.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
-Mike

Thanks, By default Creator3D is a 24-bit plus 8-bit overlay graphics system. This means that if you don't change any of the factory settings for the framebuffer or CDE, then ximtool will run just fine because there is already an 8-bit display running simultaneously on top of the 24-bit display. So, you must have intentionally set the system to run in 24-bit only mode; change it back. I have several Ultra boxes with Creator3D. Ximtool runs with no problems in the default 24-bit plus 8-bit overlay mode. craig

Hi Craig - I 'inherited' this machine about 6 months after it came out of the box; I have not reason to suspect that the person who originally set it up changed any of the factory defaults, but apparently something like that was done. How can I check this, i.e. where would such a change be made? Thanks, -Karl > I have several Ultra boxes with Creator3D. I can go to the console login and start openwin manually and I can run ximtool fine. What I'd like to be able to do is start from the CDE login screen (the xserver is already running) and run ximtool from my normal cde session. I tried the modification of the /usr/dt/config/Xservers, i.e. the original file looked like: :0 Local local_uid@console root /usr/openwin/bin/Xsun :0 -nobanner -dev /dev/ffb0 defdepth 24 which I changed to :0 Local local_uid@console root /usr/openwin/bin/Xsun :0 -nobanner -dev /dev/ffb0 defdepth 8 defClass PseudoColor However, when I do this I get an error: 'Cannot open console :0' - I'm not sure if this is the exact error message - I didn't log it and I'd have to kill this message to verify it... The upshot is that the cde login screen doesn't come up when I make the change to Xservers. > You can change the system default by editing the system > /usr/dt/config/Xservers file to add the arguments > ........ defDepth 8 defClass PseudoColor > Or, on the command line start X using something like > /usr/openwin/bin/Xsun :0 -dev /dev/fb defclass PseudoColor > Note that you can put the above command in a .xserverrc file in your login > directory (see the xinit man page) and just comment it out when you want to > restart in 24-bit mode. > Hope this helps. > Cheers, > -Mike
