NUMBER: 16 KEYWORDS: spectra, smoothing, filtering, boxcar DATE: Mon Jan 31 09:37:58 MST 2005 FROM: valdes Q: Is there any way in IRAF by which I can take a 5 point running average for a given specta (say spectra.imh). A: This can be done either with the SPLOT 's' key or with the task BOXCAR. In both cases a moving average is also called "boxcar smoothing". In SPLOT it is interactive for visual interaction. The result can be saved from SPLOT if you want. Note that other tasks in the IMFILT package (see help imfilt) can be applied to 1D spectra as well as 2D. The most common alternative to boxcar filtering is gaussian filtering.
