Question about “mkmask” in XDIMSUM

I have a question concerning the script "mkmask" in XDIMSUM.

At line 59 of 'mkmask.cl', it is written:
# Set flag value at 1 DN below minimum pixel value in normalized image.

And, 5 lines after:
      flagval = 2 * minval - maxval

I don't understand why. Could somebody explain me?

In some cases, xmosaic crashes at this point (in the next 'imexpr' command, I
think) with a "Floating point overflow" error but I don't know why yet... Any
idea?
