Gaussian convolving spectra with wavelength dependent width

Frank Valdes wrote on Aug 03, 1999

Does anyone knows a way to do the following in IRAF?

Q: I have used "gauss" to convolve spectra with a gaussian of a given width.
Is there a task that can convolve with a gaussian of wavelength-dependent
width? (to mimic a spectral resolution varying with lambda)...

A: I am not aware of any easy way to do what you want. It could be done with
a clever script though great care would be needed to do this in a reasonably
efficient way. Possibly the best suggestion would be to write your
own Fortran or C program and use either the IMFORT library (a library
for accessing IRAF imh images in a Fortran program) or WSPECTEXT and
RSPECTEXT to convert to and from an intermediate text file.
