SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMMER, NOAO

The National Optical Astronomy Observatory has an immediate opening for a
Scientific Programmer in the Software and Data Management group. This group
has the responsibility for the development and support of the Image
Reduction and Analysis Facility (IRAF), a large software system providing
data reduction and analysis capabilities for astronomical data from both
ground and space based high energy, optical and IR observatories. In
addition, the group is developing expertise in data archiving and data
mining with emphasis on activities that will lead to participation in the
National Virtual Observatory (NVO) and other initiatives that depend heavily
on manipulation and analysis of very large datasets. This position will
require working in a project team comprising of scientists and software
developers in support of the above efforts. Responsibilities will include
software specification and design, systems and/or science applications
programming, and responsibility for user and systems support. This position
requires a minimum of three years of programming experience, preferably in a
scientific computing environment. Experience with software development under
UNIX is required, including experience with modern compiled and interpreted
computer languages and object oriented computing techniques. Experience with
programming in the IRAF environment would be a plus but is not required. A
background in science, especially astronomy, and a strong interest in
working within astronomy are desirable. This position would initially be for
a two year period. It is our intent that it continue indefinitely using
funding to be obtained through a proposal to support NVO- related
activities. 09/20/2000

SOFTWARE SCIENTIST / PROGRAMMING MANAGER, NOAO

The National Optical Astronomy Observatory has an immediate opening for a
Software Scientist, a senior position, in the Software and Data Management
group. This group has the responsibility for the development and support of
the Image Reduction and Analysis Facility (IRAF), a large software system
providing data reduction and analysis capabilities for astronomical data
from both ground and space based high energy, optical and IR observatories.
In addition, the group is developing expertise in data archiving and data
mining with emphasis on activities that will lead to participation in the
National Virtual Observatory and in other initiatives that depend heavily on
manipulation and analysis of very large datasets. The Software Scientist
will work closely with the Chief Programmer in planning the activities of
the group (6-8 programmers) and in the day-to-day management of the group,
and will act as a coordinator for teams involving scientists and
programmers. In addition, the Software Scientist will participate in the
support and development activities of the group. A small fraction of time
will be available for personal scientific research. This position requires a
background in science (astronomy preferred) and a minimum of five years of
programming experience, preferably in a scientific computing environment.
Experience with software development under UNIX is required, including
experience with modern compiled and interpreted computer languages and
object oriented computing techniques. Experience with programming in the
IRAF environment would be a plus but is not required. In addition, some
demonstrated management experience is highly desirable. 09/20/2000
